Mantova Comics & Games 2009: The Making of the manifesto

Last week we presented Paolo Barbieri, the author of the manifesto Mantova Comics & Games 2009 . And since we are full of enthusiasm and want to do, we do not stop here certainly, however Mantova Comics & Games is an event that brings enthusiasm - ours and yours - his main weapon.
This week we present here the Making Of poster of the 2009 edition, with commentary by Paul in person, the intent is to bring you "inside" to the birth and "construction" of the great picture of Paul, the pencil to the final version.
Why, it is worth remembering, Mantova Comics is proud of the authors of today but also tomorrow.

Step 1

lights and colors of the final design. This phase is the most complicated, because often I did not immediately
a clear idea of \u200b\u200bwhat colors to use: we say that all ages
a draft initial gray. To differentiate the poster from the earlier ones I had in mind
to use the green as background color, but the details and reflections of the character came out with the progress of
sketch. "

Step 3

"The following is the longest, or the color of the detailed design and all the details. With the draft as a base color, digital color proceed with all programs such as Painter and Photoshop. I use levels also extremely useful for the final balance of colors. Often compared to colored sketch, makes numerous changes, especially in the details. I usually do not use them much, but in this drawing I wanted to highlight a lot of the backlight, especially strong here especially for the effect of light given by the rockets. I also wanted to take effect "brushstrokes" quite strong, quite evident in the clouds behind the character. "

Cubefield Cheats That Work

Interview with Paolo Barbieri

Paolo Barbieri is on the crest of the wave ten years, has illustrated the covers of Chronicles of the Wars of the world emerged and the world showed Licia Troisi, has ranged as an illustrator in all kinds of novel, was even praised by George RR Martin.
Paul is a great illustrator, and is the author of the manifesto of Mantova Comics & Games 2009 which you can see on the side.
Difficult to say how proud we are of his work, much better about leaving the individual concerned.

Hello Paul, first I ask you to introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello to all readers!
am a professional illustrator for 10 years or so, and I specialize in fantasy art.
In my work I have mostly illustrated book covers, ranging in tutti i generi possibili: fantascienza, gialli, avventura, fantasy e narrativa di vario genere.

Did you have an artistic level directives or you were left completely free in the implementation of the manifesto?
The only request that I obtained was that in the design, as well as a building known of Mantua, a dragon appeared: and what better occasion to draw it as he goes and destroys part of the castle of St. George (!)

Is there any author in particular esteem and to which you redo?
More than anything I am inspired to international and illustrators I admire particularly artists such as Brom, Alan Lee, Brian Froud and many others.
But the first that ever impressed me were Michael Whelan and Rodney Matthews: The first time I saw their collection of illustrations, I was literally speechless.
Among the Italians admire all Togliani Victor, which for me was a kind of important "artistic father".

You have illustrated for several publishers, including Mondadori. You have designed, among others, Licia Troisi, Michael Crichton, Umberto Eco, George RR Martin.
it feel to be carried out graphically the covers and interpret the characters of authors so popular?
More what else is satisfactory to achieve a design that I like to order 100%.
That said, it was important that an illustration successful may well appear on the covers of authors like these.
speech apart for Licia Troisi, where you and I have practically started this journey together in the realm of the Dragons (before I had a strong preference for science fiction).
In a sense we've seen each other grow, I as a designer and she as a writer.
Instead I was surprised when one morning I found an email from George RR Martin, which I did compliment the cover of the Ice Dragon. Let's say you have a lot of things that give satisfaction!

Six a fan of comics? If so, what are the titles and characters that you like?
No, generally have never been a big fan of comics, I always preferred to look for collections of images of great illustrators ...
In the past I had crushes on Dylan Dog (approximately the first 100 numbers), Spawn and Gea di Luca Enoch (fantastic). But besides these, I've never read a lot.
I do, however, a special mention for Loki and Silver Surfer: Requiem, designed by the excellent Esad Ribic.

What are you working now?
I just finished a demanding task: they are creatures of the world emerged, where I told him to imagine the characters, landscapes, dragons and a good part of what appears in the first trilogy Licia Troisi, or the Chronicles of the world emerged.
There are about 150 drawings and black and white or color, where I tried to capture the best character and sense of the trilogy of Lycia.

A curiosity: if I were to define your poster with a single adjective, which identifies him than the three years of work, which to use?
enveloping.
